Mohammad Reza Mortazavi‘s percussion solo performances by far exceed the idea of what to expect from a percussion concert. Playing traditional Persian handdrums (Tombak & Daf), he pushes the language of the instruments far beyond their traditional folk roots, embracing the simultaneous playing of polyrhythmic beats, sophisticated melodies and a broad spectrum of overtones. Radical electronic artist Mark Fell introduced us to Mohammad around 3 years ago as one of the most remarkable percussionists he’s ever heard – and we’ve been addicted ever since. We can’t wait to welcome to Scotland for the first time at this years’ Counterflows.
