Day One – Novas Frequencias Versus Counterflows!
So I have arrived in Rio De Janeiro. After the initial shock of the full force of the Brazilian summer heat I managed to venture off into the streets of Rio. Great smells. Perfect blue sky. And the twittering and calling of bird song alien to my ears. The streets of Bogatofo where I’m staying are narrower than expected but always visible is “Big Jesus” as Maria Claudia who met me at the airport calls that famous Rio landmark.
Lunch with Chico, Rashad Becker, Ashley Paul and Aki Onda in the Santa Teresa district. I already feel the excitement generated by Chico of a really positive relationship between Counterflows and Novas Frequencias.
Then back to the venue for tonight’s Rashad Becker’s performance and I’m now right at home. The venue is a small community space called Audio Rebel which has been the driving force for the new scene in Rio that Chico is part of. For 10 year’s with the driving force of Pedro it’s owner Audio Rebel has been supporting local artists doing new stuff. It turns out behind the sound desk is the drummer from Chinese Cookie Poets who are hopefully going to part of Counterflows 2015’s Brazil invasion. This is Rio’s Cafe Oto or Glad Cafe. Perfect!
So can’t wait for the gig to happen tonight at 8pm. The festival begins for real. And the air conditioning hums on!
