Day Six – The Talk and the Monkey
Saturday lie-in after the Lapa experience. Maria Claudia picked me up to got to the Talking Sounds session at POP. These are nice things to do at festivals. A chance to listen, agree and disagree… We were up first. Graham Mckenzie and myself were quizzed by chico about our festival. John Butcher and Mark Sanders were up next with a fascinating disclosure of of art of improvising or instant composing as John explained. One thing that struck me from what John was saying was the the way we get hung up with the term improvising. John explained it really is just that artists music. So a Derek Bailey piece is as much a piece of music as say a Schubert song is. Improvisation is just the method or process.
Near the end of their talk I slipped out for a break and there outside the building were William and Rashad staring at the power lines. I had to find out why? Monkey, Monkey Monkey! Totally amazing! little marmoset like monkeys were running along the power cables. If I didn’t realise I was in Brazil… I did now.
