Our club nights at Counterflows Festival 2019 will be celebrating new forms of dance music emanating from Southern America. As part of this we will be welcoming Afro-Columbian artist Jim C. Nedd & Milanbased artist and researcher Palm Wine for a special Guarapo DJ set on the Saturday club night of the festival at The Art School
Guarapo is a recent born music genre developed and known only in the city of Barranquilla, North Colombia. Guarapo is the natural answer of young generations of producers growing up in Barranquilla listening to Musica Africana from the 70s: each Guarapo song starts with a sample from a soukous, rumba or related genres and suddenly becomes an obsessive, repetitive beat, constructed with a very small portion of drum breaks. Each cut is short, little more than a stark and hypnotic drop for the right moment, to be liberally sprayed with a hail of placas.
In 2017 Jim C.Nedd & Palm Wine compiled the stunning GUARAPO! Forty Bangers from Barranquilla, which was released on Honest Jon’s Records. So ahead of the night we asked them to pick their top 10 GUARAPO bangers. Enjoy, and see you on the dance floor!
